Cineraria Maritima was first introduced by one of the leading homoeopathic practitioners of Venezuela around 1900 and has since been included in textbooks, materia medica(s) and pharmacopoeia(s).
The juice of Cineraria Maritima has long been used in the treatment of cataracts and coeal opacities. Dr. Blackwood (A Mannual of Materia Medica, Therapeutics and Pharmacology) states “Juice of the plant is employed in the treatment of cataract and coeal opacity”. According to him, a drop is to be instilled in the eye four or five times a day for several months.
The remedy to be effective should be made from fresh expressed juice.
A look at the product label of Schwabe Cineraria confirms that the product has ‘50% juice’ blended properly to remain stable and effective.
Other homoeopathic literatures like Dictionary of Practical Materia Medica by Clarke or Materia Medica by Dr. William Boericke also recommend juice (succus is the term sometimes used to refer juice) or aqueous extract to be used.
A clinical trial of CMS was reported in British Homoeopathic Joual as early as 1970.
Thousands of people have benefited in the treatment of coeal opacities, control of cataract, lowering of floaters and for minor problems such as conjunctivitis.
Experts on the subject reject the use of tincture or dilutions which has no literature support or clinical trials. Doubts prevail about use of its potencies as exteal medicines.
The product (Cineraria Maritima Schwabe) in the retail market is priced at Rs. 430/- for 10ml bottle and this price, according to the users, is worth it because of the results it gives.
